Buying Your First Accessible Vehicle

If you’re in the market for your first accessible vehicle, there are a couple things you need to know before you make the leap. The salesman might know a lot about the features and benefits of the car you’re looking to buy, but it’s unlikely that he knows what a vehicle needs in order to be adapted for mobility customers.

Does he know if the vehicle’s suspension is strong enough to bear the weight of the conversion, adaptive equipment, a wheelchair and all the passengers? Does he know if the roof and door can be raised if need be? Or the floor lowered? Does he know if there is a heavy-duty electrical system for the accessories?

You should visit or call Quality Vans and Specialty Vehicles before purchasing your first accessible vehicle. We know which vehicles can be modified and which are easier to modify than others. We know which modifications require removing parts, how to replace them, how to increase the overall height of the vehicle and more.

Our technicians know the vehicles and understand the unique needs of a person with disabilities. No two people with disabilities are the exactly the same, which is why we encourage our customers to avoid cookie-cutter solutions. For example, a dealer might try to sell you a van with luxury extras that may have to be removed before converting the vehicle, resulting in wasted money.

Save time and money by consulting with Quality Vans and Specialty Vehicles before making decisions. We can modify a vehicle you already own or modify a new vehicle.

Quality Vans and Specialty Vehicles is located in Tempe, Arizona off of Broadway and the 101. We will help you determine which vehicle and adaptive equipment you need. You can also contact a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) at www.driver-ed.org.

Tips for Test Driving Your New Mobility Vehicle.

Braun 2003 Entervan For Sale

Test driving a new vehicle before purchase is an important part of the purchase decision, especially if you have special needs or disabilities.

Consider these factors before deciding on a new vehicle:

  • Is the seating comfortable? This is an important factor for those with disabilities when driving for an hour or two. If you plan on having passengers, it’s important to check the back seat for comfort as well.
  • Can the vehicle be adaptable to your particular needs? If you have special needs, such as a wheelchair lift, it is important to call a certified mobility dealer to see if the vehicle is adaptable. Quality Vans is a certified dealer for mobility products. Call us at (480) 464-7007 for a free consultation on your specific needs. We also have the ability to transfer a lift from your old vehicle into your new one.
  • Parallel-park the car. This tells about the car’s visibility and blind spots and tests your back and neck comfort.
  • Is the rear window visibility good? Adjust the mirrors to your comfort spot.
  • Test the car’s comfort on bad roads like those with potholes, on freeways, and places you normally drive. If the car handles poorly on a stormy day with perfect roads, imagine how it will handle in bad conditions.
  • Test drive after dark, if possible. Can you comfortably see and/or use the instruments: the headlights, air conditioning, CD player?
  • If you live in a hot climate, test how log it takes the air conditioner to cool down the interior of the car. Those with MS know that heat exacerbates their symptoms and so it is important to stay cool.
